French, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese and Latin are all taught at Caversham Prep.
The children learn French in class from Reception through to Year 6. We teach mainly conversational French in the Infants and begin to introduce grammar, reading and writing in French through the Junior classes.
The Reception class has a French Breakfast for parents to attend where we serve coffee (hot chocolate for the children) and croissants for breakfast. Then the children sing French songs to show their parents what they have learned.
Year 6 have an online Mandarin lesson once a week in the Spring and Summer terms, after 11+.
French Club called La Jolie Ronde taken by a native speaker.
Spanish Club is also offered as a lunchtime club by a native speaker.
We run an after school Latin Class taken by one of our Governors.
Mrs Dent, Headmistress of the Abbey School told us that our girls are very successful in Latin classes at the Abbey due to the fact that they had already started Latin at Prep School.
Where possible, languages are integrated into other learning.
Care is taken to integrate subjects where relevant so that links between themes are clear to pupils. For example, the study of birds in Year 1 encompassed stories, writing and counting activities and a visit from a local falconry as well as learning the equivalent names in French of the most common species. -ISI Report
